Parenting and Neurodivergence

Neurodivergent families often have different needs than neurotypical families. Our emotional regulation may be more difficult due to higher sensory sensitivities, and we often have more to manage practically with fewer support sources. As neurodivergence is hereditable, often one or more parents is also neurodivergent - or has neurodivergent traits - and may struggle to co-regulate under stress.

Who is neurodivergent? Neurodivergence includes one or more of the following traits, conditions, or brain styles:

  • ADHD

  • Autistic

  • AuDHD

  • Deeply Feeling / Highly Sensitive

  • Dyslexic

  • Dyscalculiac

  • Dyspraxic

  • Gifted

  • OCD

  • Sensory Processing Differences

  • … and more …

Our struggles may not be validated by others for multiple reasons, despite higher support needs. Outside of neurodivergent communities, it’s often hard to find our challenges normalized. In addition to the need to advocate for our children in multiple environments - school, medical, social - we must also work hard to be responsive to the child(ren) we have, and to shield them from the prejudice of others.

Being the Parent Your Child Needs

Many of us are hoping to forge a different relationship with our children - and our partners - than our own parents had. Even when we’ve had exceptional, responsive parents, we are faced with raising children in a new age, with different pressures and expectations.

These challenges may feel particularly overwhelming when parenting intense and/or exceptional children, and can often lead to relationship discord as well. Utilizing cognitive and relational theories, as well as mindfulness practices, I support parents as they care for themselves and learn to foster their child’s unique strengths.
